fame, 5ONE5 and the ponce boyz

I knew that this weekend would be busy. It's Monday. 8:45 am. I have my glasses on and Starbucks in my hand. I am TIRRRREEEDDDD! I really could have slept in today. It's gloomy and I did not want to get out of bed. So enough about my complaining, at least I had a good weekend to show for it.

Friday, last minute, instead of going for bubble tea with Maureen, I asked her if she wanted to see Fame (I did my review in an earlier post). We watched the movie (and surprisingly did not buy any junk food to eat, luckily, I had Sweet Tarts in my bag) and then went to Boston Pizza for some Cactus chips and an individual The Pepper pizza (thanks Pernia!). BTW, we wanted to eat at the bar and got carded. Maur's classic line, "You've got to be kidding me, I'm as old as your ages combined"

Saturday, Mike and I did get to rest for a bit but then had to clean up because we would be having company the next day. Later at night, we picked up Trix and Jae and headed down to Kiwe for Jonny's birthday dinner. Then it was off to 5ONE5 (aka Dee's place). It's kinda cool that so many people can fit in his place. I drank a little too much (damn JD shots) and talked Reinard's ear off. We got home pretty late, I crashed and Mike played Playstation Home, his new obsession, until the wee hours of the morning (I'm talking 6 am).

Sunday, the Ponce family came over. Mike and I baby-proofed our whole place because we were worried about having three kids in our small condo. Rylen is pretty good and can enterain himself, Reid is still a baby so he won't make a mess, it was R.J. that we were worried about. These kids are so entertaining, especially R.J., he is the craziest, fearless kid I know. Jes and Richie asked me to be Reid's godmother. Shocked but honoured, I said yes. The Ponces family is one of my favorite families to hang out with. They always welcome us to their home with open arms, they never make us feel uncomfortable because we don't have kids, we love their kids and I am pretty sure their kids love us and Jes makes awesome potato salad. This family will always be a part of our lives and now that I will Reid's "Ninang", they can't get rid of us anymore =)

That sums up my weekend. I can't wait for the next one. Only 5 more days to go.

movie review: fame

I have a bad memory but I am pretty sure that I never watched Fame the TV show. I love dancing movies so I wanted to check out 2009's Fame. Maureen and I went yesterday last minute. During the entire movie, I kept on thinking that it's pretty much like Step Up (I love this movie). The thing is in Fame, although the dancing and singing numbers are great, it lacked story lines and character builds, something that Step Up and Center Stage have. One character who bugged me - Jenny was quite annoying and she had one of the major story lines. If some characters look familiar but you can't place them...Denise (Naturi Naughton) was Lil Kim in Notorious and Victor (Walter Perez) was Bobby Reyes in Friday Night Lights.

It's definitely a movie to watch on DVD.

my thoughts on my fall TV line up

Now that all the season premieres of my FALL TV LINE UP have aired, I want to share my thoughts about each show.

One Tree Hill
Last season, the relationship of Lucas and Peyton annoyed me. It annoyed me so much that I wanted to stop watching. The start of Season 7 with new faces was like a breath of fresh air for me. The addition of Clay (Robert Buckley) and Quinn (Shantel VanSanten) - both yum! - makes the show very interesting. They have past that we want to know about, actually, I just want to know more about them in general. My WTF moment...Dan and Rachel are married. I seriously need to know more about this. The writers of the show have kept it interesting with the new characters and twists, it makes us not really care that Lucas and Peyton are off the show. To be honest, they were just too emo for me. I need drama and action!!! I can't wait to see how the rest of the season plays out. Thank goodness the CW picked up all 22 episodes.

Gossip Girl
Let me first say that I love Carter Bazien. I am glad that they brought him back this season and I hope he becomes a regular. His relationship with Serena is quite interesting because we don't really know what happened while they were away in Europe, like details on how they hooked up because last season, they left us with Carter trying to help Serena find her dad. They touched upon it in the first two episodes but I want more! I have avoided any gossip or rumours about what is going to happen this season. I have already read all the books so I like to keep some element of surprise when it comes to the TV show. One thing I am dying to see - Hilary Duff, who I believe will be making her appearance in the episode 6.

I was disappointed when I found out that Ethan would not be returning for season 2 but was quite happy when I realized that Liam would be a regular. He is the bad guy that has those underlying good qualities - every girl's dream guy. For this season though, it's wearing pretty thin for me. Naomi and her sister, Jen are so obnoxious, it's annoying. Annie is too emo for me. I know that she has been through a lot but it's tiring watching her mope around. Dixon just bothers me. Silver is psycho. Adriana is so hot now. Navid, you just feel sorry for him. Poor guy wants to lose his virginity and his ex-slut of a GF won't give him any. And then there is Teddy. He looks so plastic. Like a Ken doll. He annoys me too. Annie and Dixon's parents annoy me. I think everyone on this show annoys me except for Liam. If I have to get rid of one TV show in my lineup, this may be this one.

Melrose Place
This is probably my new favorite drama show this fall. I did watch the original MP but wasn't a loyal follower. The storylines of each character has got me hooked and they all interwine somehow. The pilot had so much going on to keep your attention span and to make you want more. I love all the guys on the show - Auggie, Jonah and David. I think Lauren and Ella are so pretty. Ashlee Simpson-Wentz is doing well playing her crazy character, Violet. I wonder if her being so naive is all an act? I love how they are bringing back old characters on the show. I can't wait for episode 4 when Jane comes back as the new landlord. What can I say, I LOVE, LOVE this show!

The Hills
This Tuesday...The bitch is back...and thank goodness that Brody will still be around.

The City
Again, this Tuesday. I hope for an Alex-Whitney reunion

The Beautiful Life: TBL
Not quite sure how I feel about this show after seeing only one episode. I miss this week's so I won't say much except...I really don't understand this show because the models are not hot at all. I think they needed to cast more "beautiful" people. I like Mischa's character though (great comeback) and Cole is kinda cute.

I had no idea what the hype was about this show until I actually watched the first two episode. There was a huge buzz about it with my Twitter friends and now I am hooked. Comedy and singing all in one, who could ask for anything more.

Survivor: Samoa
After 18 seasons, I am still obsessed with this reality show. There is definitely eye candy in this one (both guys and girls) and I think it will be an season filled with lying and deceit (esp with that Russell guy). They started off with a good test of leadership and maybe they will add different twists this time around. Samoa is beautiful, and you know me, I love beaches.

Vampire Diaries
Everyone who knows me, knows that I am obsessed with Twilight. It made me fall in love with the whole vampire culture only because vampires are nice/lovable in Stephenie Meyers' eyes. True Blood is too hardcore and gory for me so as Mike puts it, Vampire Diaries is a good median. I will tell you though, I do have moments when Damon scares me. I mentioned in a previous post that I was enjoying the show because it is so much better than the book and also, the show has a killer soundtrack. As long as Mike continues to watch the show with me, I will keep on watching (and I will read the next two books of the series so I can compare). Originally I thought that they did a bad casting job for Stefan but he is growing on me.

Grey's Anatomy
WOW...O'Malley is really gone. The season opener was quite long and it dragged but I liked the concept of the 40 day thing. It showed that when you lose someone close to you, time can pass and you may not fully grieve right away. Although George didn't have a storyline last season, it will be strange to not have him around. I love Lexie and Sloan together. I hope this season they focus more on them! The Mercy West/Seattle Grace merge will be interesting.

This post seriously took me forever to write and at one point, I wanted to give up and stop writing about all the shows I am watching. There is way too many. I think it's time to buy a PVR.

what i'm up to...

...the answer is nothing much. Since I've been back from Vancouver, this is what I have been doing:
  • Working like a beeyatch. Sometimes I really don't see the point on a vacation. You work your tail off to tie up everything before you leave and then you are swamped when you get back. Sure, you get to relax in between but you fall back into the same rut when you return to work. I can't wait for our big women's conference on October 1st to be over and done with.
  • My dad's younger sister is here from the Philippines. She is visiting for 3 weeks. We saw her twice last week and she is an awesome cook.
  • Went to Blowfish with Dee, James, Trix and Mike. The food is good, especially the blowfish giant ebi shooter but after coming back from Vancouver and eating sushi there, nothing compares!
  • That same night, got to see Dee's new pad. It's awesome and so well decorated. Looking forward to Saturday night's party for Jonny's birthday.
  • Watching the 10-something odd TV shows that are part of my fall line up. It's too hard to watch everything so contemplating about getting a PVR. I ended up watching most of the shows on the weekend on either ROD or Megavideo.
  • Drank lots of my fruit concoction - orange juice, raspberries and blackberries.
  • Stalking my Starbucks crush.
  • Got hubby to watch Vampire Diaries, Melrose Place and 90210.
  • Met up with Pat & Danny, the couple we met on our first Punta Cana trip in 2003. I can't believe that we have managed to stay friends with them for 6 years. We haven't seen them since last year but it's always a great time. I have a feeling this will be a lifelong friendship.
That's about it from me. I should be going to sleep now. I pretty much determined today with Julie (my BFF) that I should be getting 7.5 hours of sleep. Looks like I won't be getting it tonight.

product review: gosh professional shampoo/conditioner

In desperate need for a new set of shampoo and conditioner, I went to Shoppers to see if I could buy a more higher end hair care products but not pay an arm and a leg. I was recently using Pantene Beautiful Lengths which I got from BlushPretty's July Beauty Board. I came across Gosh Professional Pump Up the Volume Shampoo and Conditioner. I have very thin hair and am constantly looking for products that will give me volume. Well, I have found my new love. The bottles regularly sell for $8.99 each at Shoppers but I got a deal - $14.99 for two 500 ml bottles (pump included), This set definitely cleans my hair (mind you, I don't wash my hair every day so I need a product that will fully get rid of all the gunk in my hair) and also gives my hair more body and bounce.

bring it back...

I remember this chewy candy and it came in many different flavours. I would squish the rectangle shaped candy until it was flat and then eat it. Jolly Ranchers makes something comparable but it doesn't have fruity (dark coloured) center like Bonkers.

Just recently, I started to develop a craving for sparkling water. I thought those who actually ordered sparkling water in restaurants were kinda snotty but I find myself ordering it all the time now. This makes me think back to the day when New York Seltzers were around. As a kid, drinking a seltzer was like you were drinking an alcoholic drink. I haven't had a New York Seltzer since I was 10 but I do remember that almost every flavour was super sweet and fizzy.

This short-lived R & B group came to an end because of a stupid, fame-whore group member. If this member had only been humble and thankful that she had been chosen by Diddy, himself out of thousands of girls, this group may still be together. These girls together are extremely talented but you need each girl to make the group complete. Their second album, Welcome to the Dollhouse had so many catchy tunes.

I only got a few issues of this magazine but I was very impressed with the variety of information included. Who doesn't love a magazine made by Martha Stewart? The layout was awesome and the content useful. They should bring it back...who can I write to to request this?

They were the ultimate family. Not a perfect one but almost close. They knew how to solve problems but also have fun. I don't think that there is a family show out there at the moment that the whole family can watch together. Everything now is too racy. One episode that sticks out in my mind is when Dr. Huxtable wanted to show Theo what it's like to live in the "real world". I also love when they would do a little talent shows, dress up and sing. I think it would be worth to start collecting the box sets. I would definitely want my children to watch this show.

I should have written post two days ago and posted it when it was her birthday. Anyway, I just came back from Vancouver and got to spend time with Cristina Pernia. I don't know how it happened but these days, I call her "Pernia", not to her face but when I mention her in conversation. I have too many friends named Christine, Kristine, Christina, Cristina...that I have call them by their last name.

Pernia and I go way back...back to OQC and partying days in Toronto. I met her through Maureen and her crew. But I would like to think now that I have developed my own friendship with her because we happen to have a couple of things in common - like our love for: boy bands (we left work early one day to stalk a certain band whose name will not be mentioned), teenybopper TV shows (90210, MP, GG, OTH and more recent Glee), Freddie Prinze Jr. (Boys and Girls, Down to You, Summer Catch, Head Over Heels, She's All That) and music (I love her playlists).

After spending some time with her in her hometown (without the friends who introduced us), I got to know her on a more personal level. She is so cool and down to earth. She tells it like it is and feels no ways to put you in your place or call you out when you are being silly. I am glad that I got this opportunity to re-visit the friendship I once had with her back in the day when we were the Queen and Princess of Pop Culture. Oh wait, we still are!

To finish off this post, this playlist is for Pernia. It's some songs that I think she would like. It's not the usual songs that I would listen to but I have grown to love them.

day five, six and seven in vancouver

Before I forget, I should write this post out...

DAY FIVE (Thursday):
  • Played stylist and fashion show with Pernia and Mike before she went to work. Yes, we are silly.
  • Mike and I went to Metropolis at Metrotown and rode the SkyTrain to get there. We walked around, didn't buy anything but did eat lunch in the Food Court.
  • Got back to Hotel Pernia and watched Glee (for the first time), LOVED IT but had to wait for Pernia to watch the second episode.
  • Chilled for the rest of the afternoon, then went to Pernia's favorite sushi place in Richmond. I forgot the same and what we ate. We were so full so we went home.
  • Had awesome convo with Pernia and Mike. Continued the conversation at Hotel Pernia.
DAY SIX (Friday):
  • Slept in and then packed.
  • Marty picked us up and went on a tour of EA Sports. It's awesome there. There's a cafe, cake station everywhere, rooftop terraces, a soccer field, beach volleyball, full size gym, tanning bed, and so much more. Everyone is just playing video games. I need to get a job at this company!!! Unfortunately the employee store was closed so we didn't get to buy games.
  • Went to the Banting condo. They live by the water downtown. Their area is beautiful. We got to meet lil Marcus. He is a cutie!
  • Ate at Cactus Club, a Vancouver staple, with Mike, Eileen and Marty. Ate Halibut soft tacos. Yum! We had great conversation with these guys. Still in shock that we haven't seen Marty since 2000!!!
  • Walked to the SkyTrain, wow, with nice weather VanCity downtown comes to life!
  • Crashed early, didn't bother to wait for Pernia to come home
DAY SEVEN (Saturday):
  • Mike the manservant, as Pernia likes to call him, made us breakfast, then we got ready to head out
  • Stopped by Aberdeen Mall (Chinese Mall, I hope that's the name of the mall), ate some lunch and shopped at Daiso. This store is amazing!!! I was like a little kid in a candy store
  • Drove by Richmond Olympic Oval and then headed to the airport to go back home. Flight was uneventful except for a little disturbance. Stay tuned for a video...
Thanks to the staff at St. Regis Hotel, Cristina, Eileen & Marty and Tina & Nathalie for showing us their city. Hopefully, we will be back soon!

vampire diaries tv series

I missed the series premiere last night for Vampire Diaries. It's not a show that people want to watch this fall. Who really needs another vampire tv show/movie? But I read the book that this television show is based on. The book was a slow read for me but as always, any book that I have read that turns into a tv show or movie, I must watch to compare.

The characters from the book are pretty much the same except for one that sticks out so far. Elena doesn't have a baby sister, Margaret, instead, she has a younger brother, Jeremy. I like it better this way. Another change is that instead of Stefan living in an old house with an old lady, he lives with his uncle in the Salvatore house. But in reality, Stefan is really the uncle since he is a vampire and will forever be A teenager. I also like this change.

The first episode was okay. Not as bad as I thought it would be. One thing that kept my interest was the soundtrack. Some songs that were played, Running up That Hill by Placebo, Say (All I Need) by One Republic, and Kids by MGMT. I will continue to watch the show online on the weekends (as it will start next week to conflict with Survivor) until I can't stand it anymore. I really just want to see how the storyline plays out and what songs will be played in each episode.

I must say, CW is putting out a great fall line up this year!

P.S. - I just read that the CW will have encores of Vampire Diaries and Melrose Place on Friday evenings. BONUS!

day three and four in vancouver

Today is Friday and it's our last full day here in Vancouver. The sun is full out shining and Mike and I should be out and about enjoying what this city has to offer. I will be the first to tell you, I am not a nature type girl (unless you put me in a beach setting). I don't like to hike, walk or explore. I once was in touch with nature when I was a kid living in Whitehorse but now I am more of a city or beach girl. Anyway, today would have been nice to go to Stanley Park or Grouse Mountain but this tail end of our trip has us staying in Burnaby and after being downtown for four days with nothing but rain, we aren't really in the mood to trek back down there. This trip has been quite a confusing one with many surprises that have thrown our plans off. Well, who are we kidding, we didn't really have any set plans...

DAY THREE (Tuesday):
  • Started our day off at Holt Renfrew so I could buy this Cle de Peau lipstick I was eyeing but I didn't end up buying it because I didn't feel like spending $60 for lipstick
  • Mike and I walked over to Robson and went to some stores but then found Cupcakes by Heather & Lori so I picked up some cupcakes to eat and to take home.
  • Since it was sunny, we walked over to Canada Place with intentions to walk around and watch an IMAX movie but we hopped on a Big Bus and went over to Granville Island.
  • At Granville Island, we walked around the market and I finally got to buy the donuts I saw the day before (we got 6 - honey, sugared, chocolate bavarian, mango madness, coconut cream and peanut). We checked out some of the artist's shops and was really tempted to buy some art work.
  • We continued to ride the Big Bus and passed English Bay, Denman Street, Stanley Park, etc. We tried to go eat somewhere on Denman but most restaurants were closed for lunch. Mike and I settled for Mr. Kumpir. It's a baked potato place where you can pick 3 toppings to put on the potato. I think it's a great concept but they just don't have the greatest toppings.
  • For dinner we went to Guu. Drinks were delicious. I love the Jump concept (iced flavoured balls in your drink). The food was pretty good until we got to the Salmon and Seven friends (the 7 friends are - garlic chips, pickled onions and cucumber and a couple of other things with a fresh raw chicken egg - you wrap this mixture in nori and eat). This was over the top, different, interesting and was actually pretty sick looking. Let's not talk about it anymore.
  • Stuffed and feeling a bit weird from eating a raw egg, we went back to the hotel and watched 90210 and Melrose Place. I think we crashed because I don't remember anything that happened in the two shows.
DAY FOUR (Wednesday):
  • Rain, Rain and more rain. It seems like it was night time in the morning. What a gloomy day. We were suppose to go back to the Big Bus to explore more of the city but it was so crappy outside.
  • I got late check out until 5 pm and I am glad we did because Mike was sick from the night before and slept all day.
  • We went out for dinner at Chambar with Cristina, Marty and Eileen. It was nice to be with other people. It was Marty's birthday so I am glad that he wanted to spend his birthday with us. We were full again. Eating way too much on this trip.
  • Back to Hotel Pernia. I loved St. Regis Hotel but change of scenery is good. Cristina has such a cute place.
I will blog about day four and five when I get back home. It won't be anything exciting because Mike and I are just lounging around. I know that we should be out and about but we are not really digging a commute downtown when were there for four days straight. Mike is looking really forward to today's festivites - a tour of the EA Sports Campus.

i'm in love with this song

I was humming this song all week and I didn't know what I was humming. Finally, after watching the first episode of Glee, I am officially in love with this song (yes, I know it's old). Thank goodness I know what song it is now because it was bugging me that I kept on humming and singing the lyrics of some random song.

Dont stop believing - Journey

day one and two in vancouver

I will admit, I am very lazy to blog while here in Vancouver. I am tweeting here and there so if you want to see what I have been up to, click on the Twitter link above to read some of my tweets. I will sum up the past two days.

DAY ONE (Sunday):
  • Rainy, wet and cold, this weather is not very inviting but I am getting use to it
  • St. Regis Hotel is the bomb - excellent and friendly staff - they are all jack (or jill) of all trades, free wifi, cute, clean rooms, free breakfast (I'm talking eggs, bacon and home fries) and it's smack close to everything
  • Vancouver Aquarium - it was the first and must do on our list. It was good we went as soon as we arrived into the city because when we left left around 1 pm, there was a hella long line up
  • Coast Restaurant - crab, lobster, shrimp, mussels, oysters, champagne cocktails, it was amazing!
  • Started watching The Rachel Zoe Project. I die...
DAY TWO (Monday):
  • The Fall FAIL!
  • Went Granville Island with one half of the Cuba couple - TINA. She brought along her friend, Nathalie (she was on SYTYCD 2 but cut just before final 20). She is super sweet. Ate at Bridges - the Shrimp and Salmon burrito was so yummy. I die.
  • Walking around downtown. Holt Renfrew is one street away from us. We can see it from our hotel room. Gonna go back tomorrow to buy some Cle de Peau products.
  • Miku Restaurant - delicious japanese food. Got introduced to Aburi sushi. Plum wine cocktails are delish.
  • More of The Rachel Zoe Project. I think I want to now look for her book
I better go to sleep now. Mike has been sleeping already for more than half an hour and I don't want to sleep in tomorrow. I want to go to HR early in the morning and then go find some cupcakes. I haven't had dessert in the past two nights, I am craving big time! Hope that the weather is nice for us so we can walk/bike around Stanley Park.

CNE & solon massive

This will have to be a quick post as we are leaving in eight hours for the West Coast. I just finished up packing and am almost ready to go to bed.

On Friday, Mike and I took the day off to go to CNE with Julie and Mikey. After spending $46 on our commute by GO train and the entrance fee of $30, we ventured around. We ate Mexican poutine and had all intentions of trying out Tornado potatoes and deep fried mars bars but were too full after the poutine. If you are planning to go to CNE for the last two days, I highly suggest eating the Mexican poutine, it is so awesome. We just walked around and only stayed for three hours but before catching the train home, we picked up a dozen Tim Tom donuts. I really wished that we picked up more because they were delish!

Today, we went up to Brampton to visit the Solon Massive. I wish I could post up pictures but I am honestly too lazy to upload them to my laptop. I drank Sir Perry Pear Cider (which was so good, it was my first time trying it) and Strongbow Apple Cider and also ate so much. It was like I haven't eaten in a week, oh wait...I haven't really eaten in the past week. My sister-in-law drank like a champ and we all had a good time just yelling over each other.

BTW - thanks for Charm for showing me where I can watch The Rachel Zoe Project. I DIE! I can watch it while we are at the hotel in Vancouver.

attention west side movie crew!

Yes - that's right - I mean you - Maureen, Kristine and Marah and really anyone else who wants to come out. When I back from my vacation - Sept 27? Which movie?

I never watched FAME when I was younger but I love dance flicks!

Not keen on Sandra Bullock, she looks whack in this movie but I am kinda crushing on Bradley Cooper, so I will see this movie for him.

how to deal...

...with annoying people

BTW - I was just constantly interrupted when I was trying to speak!!!

As if I didn't already have enough shows to watch this fall (see side bar for my fall TV lineup), I just found out that I can get my dose of Lindsay Price on Eastwick. The series premiere airs on ABC on September 23rd at 10 pm.
