Lemon cupcakes with vanilla coconut icing

I wanted to bake for no reason. I had Sprinkles cupcake mix that I have wanted to use for a while now and since I had some time to kill before going to a Halloween party tonight, I thought I would bake.  I hope Julie and Maureen eat some when they come over to get ready. I made 40 mini cupcakes and I don't know what to do with them. So, here are some photos of the Lemon Cupcakes with Vanilla Coconut Icing.  Please note that I sort of burnt the toasted coconut and I did cheat and use Betty Crocker's French Vanilla icing.  It was spur of the moment baking so I didn't have all the ingredients I needed for icing.

Do you like the Halloween cupcake liners? Happy Halloween everyone! Be safe and have fun tonight!

S & J & A

I found this picture in a CD. Funny I should come across it because I just spent Sunday night with these two - Stephanie and Jonathan at Beauty Board. This was taken at a bar by my home on my 30th birthday.

Beauty / Fashion / Halloween / NJ

It's crazy how the weekends fly by these days.  I seriously dislike it. Remember when you were in school and time would slow crawl by? I know back then, I wanted time to go by quickly. If I could take it back, I would. Life is just flying by. Most of our weekends are busy.  Just this last weekend, we had to visit the parents (both sides) and then attend a baptism on Sunday. Let me tell you at the baptism, there was a crazy amount of kids there. I got to see my 5th godson get baptism and his smiley face all throughout the ceremony.

Later that night was BlushPretty's Beauty Board. For those who didn't sign up even though I may have sent you an email about it months ago, you missed out. The gift bag was filled with so many products.  There was makeup demos, Canadian beauty companies selling their products, giveaways, product testing, food and best of all, SANGRIA!  It was a night to hang out with the girls and talk about what we love most, beauty!!!  There will be another Beauty Board in the near future so sign up early to avoid disappointment. Check out BlushPretty's website for more details.  Trust me, you don't want to miss out on the next one!

Yesterday, Marah asked me to watch The September Issue with her at Varsity Theatre.  What a nice theatre. It's so clean and doesn't have any of the riff-raff (loud kids). The movie is a documentary about Anna Wintour and Vogue's September issue (biggest issue of the year). It started off very interesting but then dragged. I guess Marah and I were looking for more excitement about what goes on at Vogue. We are both die-hard fans for The Rachel Zoe Project so I guess we were expecting Vogue to be fun and upbeat. The movie portrays it to be very serious and almost sad and depressing. The one thing I loved was how they decide what pages go where. They have this huge board and put up mini versions of the photo shoot spreads on magnets. I love it. I would suggest that you wait for this movie to come out on DVD.  This movie would have actually been better as a documentary shown on A & E.  One last thing I have to say, Meryl Streep portrayed her to a tee in The Devil Wears Prada!!!

To go with my theme of today's post of busy weekends, this weekend will be filled with Halloween parties. We have an adult party to go to at Reinard & Marlon's place on Saturday and then on Sunday, we have Marques' (my lil boyfriend) one year birthday/Halloween party.  Mike and I actually have two different costumes to wear this year since we can't wear our adult costume to the kids party. Stay tuned for pictures...

Next weekend, the Solon Massive is going to New Jersey to attend their cousin's wedding. It should be interesting. I know my younger brother-in-law is going to love being in a car with me for 8 hours straight.  He doesn't know what's in store for him.  I think I should make little snack packs for all of us. Skor bars for Jay, healthy snacks like soy nuts for Steph, popcorn for Jon, chips for Mike and jelly beans for Charm.  I think we may even go outlet shopping which means...NEW BAG!!!

I have a feeling all weekends leading up to the holiday season are going to be busy.  So I will be very thankful when I get that week off between Christmas and New Years.

List of movies i want to watch (Oct 09 edition)

Since my last post in July, I have seen The Ugly Truth, Post Grad and Couples Retreat.  I have yet to watch 2012 and New Moon (I have already purchased my ticket to watch opening day with Marie).  Here are some other movies that I want to watch in the next couple of months:

October 23, 2009 - The September Issue - It sucks that there is a limited release on this movie. Looks like if I want to see it, I have to go to Varsity to see it. The movie is the "REAL" Devil Wears Prada.

October 28, 2009 - Michael Jackson's This Is It - Who wouldn't want to watch MJ prepare for his concert?

December 4, 2009 - Brothers - I was shocked that Mike found this trailer and I didn't know about it.  This movie looks intense!

January 8, 2010 - Daybreakers - I love the song that plays in the trailer. It's what is making want to watch the movie. Just kidding. I like how it's reverse that vampires have taken over the world and are running out of human blood.  This ain't no Twilight, True Blood or Vampire Diaries!

February 5, 2010 - Dear John - As a devoted Nicholas Sparks fan, I must see this movie. Not one of my favorite books but Channing Tatum is in it.

February 12, 2010 - Valentine's Day - the ultimate date movie.  You know that I am going to drag Mike's ass to this one.

My new crush

Over the weekend, while I furiously watched all the dance movies I listed on a previous post, I started to notice a certain individual. He appeared in Step Up 2: The Streets and also in You Got Served.  I started to dig deeper to see what other movies he was in and then I remembered he was in She's the Man - one of the movies I found extremely hilarious!

Meet my lastest crush, Robert Hoffman III. He is a dancer by trade but branching out into acting (and not just dance movies).  I have to admit, he's an awesome dancer (he's pretty fly for a white guy) and what girl doesn't love a guy who can move...

New song by Robin Thicke

I love Robin Thicke...and I love how I got an email from imeem letting me know of this new song (how fitting that his new album comes out on my birthday):

Sex Therapy - Robin Thicke

I'll be missing you...

There are times when life can just fly right by and you don't even blink an eye.

But then you stop for a moment and realize that someone is no longer in your life. That is when the sadness all flows back. I have tried to block out the fact that Gino is no longer here and just pretend that he is too busy with his life or that he is on vacation.

When the realization comes back that he is forever gone, the sadness hits and it hits hard. It's so uncontrollable and so hurtful that I can't even breathe.

I hate that he is gone. I hate that he left us. I hate this feeling of being lost without him. I hate feeling sorry for myself that I had to be the one to lose their sibling this way. I hate how it affects my relationships. I hate feeling empty. I hate not knowing what to do. I hate that he is gone.

Book Review: Gossip Girl: The Carlyles: Take a Chance on Me

I finally finished the third book in the Carlyles series, Take a Chance on Me. It seriously dragged. It took me about two months to read this book and I did not enjoy it one bit.  Well, I did enjoy the last few pages when everything came together and it's because I did not expect certain people to hook up or hang out.

The series is about the Carlyle triplets - Avery, Owen and Baby - it's basically the same as Gossip Girl but the younger generation. They are not as wild and crazy as Serena, Chuck, Blair, Nate, etc...

It's very difficult to read this series while you are watching Gossip Girl (TV show). If you've read the GG books and are currently watching the show, the Carlyle triplets are not interesting at all to read about. With that said, I am not going to continue to read the series when the next book comes out.  I will though anxiously wait for the next book on the original Gossip Girl cast.

My Top 5 Dance Movies

After seeing Fame a few weekends ago, it got me thinking about my favorite dance movies (since I didn't enjoy Fame as I thought I would). Here is my top five dance movies:

5. Take the Lead - I think I like this movie because I actually got to see the set. You know the last part where they are at the ballroom competition? Well, it took place in the Concert Hall at The Royal York Hotel. My company had their annual gala dinner and I was working the registration desk.  I was talking to one of the guys working on the set and he took me in to see what was going on. But I also like this movie because it mixes ballroom with hip hop. Jenna Dewan is in it and I think she's an awesome dancer. C'mon, she's danced for Janet!!!

4. Step Up 2: The Streets - Why can't I remember what happened in this movie? I do remember that I liked it - maybe it's because of this part...the final battle in the rain. I think I am going to watch it again this weekend.

3. Center Stage - A movie with a bunch of no names (like Fame) doesn't make for a good movie and you know that no name actors means bad acting.  This movie though has a great soundtrack and dance scenes. The last dance sequence is awesome because the lead actress kicks ass.

2. Save the Last Dance - Doesn't everyone love this movie? I know my sister-in-law is a huge fan of this movie.  I love when it's on Peachtree TV, I will always watch it even though I own it. Every time I see the club scene, it makes me want to go clubbing (especially when Ice Cube's song comes on).

1. Step Up - Didn't you just love the chemistry between Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan? It must have been so right that they got married. Some of my favorite parts are when Lucy sings with the band and of course, the final dance sequence. Oh ya, and that part where Nora and Tyler dance on the rooftop of the shipping yard at sunset!!! There are so many things I love about this movie and that's why it's my favorite dance movie.

Honourable mentions: Honey, Shall We Dance, Footloose, Stomp the Yard, You Got Served and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (Does Can't Stop the Music count? It's more singing than dancing)

Are there some other dance movies that you like that I failed to mention? (BTW: I am not a fan of Dirty Dancing)

product review: Oscar Blandi Tool Kit

This Oscar Blandi ToolKit is a great introduction to his line of hair products. Included in the kit are:

2 oz Proteine di Jasmine Protein Mist for Restyling Hair - I keep one at home and one at my desk. It's an excellent refreshing spray but is also great when you are curling/straightening your hair. I will eventually pick up a full size bottle.

2 oz Luce - A wonderful gloss treatment when you feel like your hair colour is dull-looking.

0.5 oz Olio Di Jasmine Shine Spray - Now that stick straight hair is in, this shine product gives you an even smoother look after you straighten your hair. It also helps keep those dead end looking healthy until your next trim.

1 oz Seta Silk Polishing Cream - If you plan to curl your dirty hair, a combo mix of this product and the protein mist lets your dirty hair hold a curl but with the illusion that it has just been washed. I will also buy this in full size as it smells wonderful!

1 oz Pronto Dry Shampoo - My favorite as I don't wash my hair everyday. This is something I cannot live without. I mainly bought this tool kit because I wanted another travel size bottle.

This tool kit is available at Sephora.

Final Fantasy

NOTE: I started to type out this post in April 16, 2009. Andrew Wong (one of my brother's friends) found the You Tube clip of Final Fantasy covering a Fantasy by Mariah Carey. Gino would always talk about this guy covering the song with his violin and how he saw him do this in Montreal.

After Gino showed me this clip, he also non-stop played this song in his car and I became addicted to it.  Whenever I hear this song on my playlist, it reminds me of Gino and how he could seriously influence me to listen to music that I would not normally listen to. Here is Final Fantasy - This is the Dream of Win and Regine.

While I was typing this, I was playing the You Tube clip and Mike yells out from the living room, "Hey, isn't that the song that Gino use to play". It's funny how you can be reminded of a person because of a song.

Would Gino...

These are some things I wonder about...I wonder if my brother would have liked or been interested in things that are happening these days.

Would Gino...

...like Kings of Leon?
...join Twitter and tweet with me, @openmiq, @mo_par and @ADUBSthoughts?
...have his store in full swing?
...have gone to Vancouver with his boys?
...have bought a Blackberry instead of using his iPhone?
...enjoy this season of One Tree Hill as much as I am enjoying it?
...have minded the fact that his friends invite us to their events/parties?

I miss you Gino!!!

Labels

After two years of blogging and 435 posts later, I now decide that I want to add labels to my posts (I'm a moron).  I could just start going forward but no...I plan to take some time each day and try to add labels to most of my post.  Call me anal, call me obsessive-conplusive...I am going to try to fix it. I have already started with the easy ones but I am going to take a break and watch episode 2 of Cougar Town. I am already bored of trying to add labels (Now that I think of it, this is a dumb idea).

I'm also going to go through all my drafts and finish writing them and posting them. I have to do this...I obviously has some ideas and thoughts to think of posting about a certain topic, so I might as well finish it. It may be random now, but I am going to do it. You may see a post every day this week because of this.

movie review: couples retreat

Any movie that takes place on a resort on a beach is a must see movie for me. I don't care how stupid the movie is, I will still want to watch it.

Couples Retreat has the beautiful scenery, the comedy, the cute kid but doesn't have any hot guys. Does it matter? Not really, if the guys are not hot, at least they are funny.

This movie is about four couples who think they are going to paradise for a vacation with fun-filled activities, only to find that they must participate in mandatory couple skills building exercises.

This movie got really bad reviews. I honestly liked it. I didn't think it was as bad as the critics made it out to be. Maybe it's because I wasn't expecting it to be an Oscar-winning movie. Like Mike said, you have to take it for what it is...a comedy. I laughed a lot in this movie (but it's no Hangover or Superbad). There were some moments when it dragged and there were some parts that really did not need to be in the movie.

My husband and I are now going to search to see where Couples Retreat was filmed cuz we want to find our animal spirit. Just kidding! Although we already talked about it and we think it's an ass! You have to see the movie to understand what we are talking about.

cupcakes in vancouver

To all my Vancouver peeps:

Please check out Le Petit Cupcakery. I was lucky enough to try out the cupcakes before they up and moved to Vancouver. I ordered chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream icing, vanilla cupcakes with chocolate ganache icing and coconut cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. All were delicious but my favorite was the vanilla with chococlate ganache.

The owner of the company is a doll abd she's super sweet!

You can also follow Le Petit Cupcakery on Twitter.

surprise, surprise

It's E.A.'s birthday today. She is a girl that I met back at Humber College and we have managed to keep in touch over the years. Although, I don't think we got together this year. I emailed her to wish her a happy birthday and I get an out of office.

Well, I decided to call her home - no answer. I call her cell and she picks up. Here is our conversation:

Me: E, it's Alysia. I'm calling to wish you a happy birthday. I emailed you and got your out of office. It says that you are on mat leave (in my head, I'm thinking WTF? Has it been that long since I last spoke with her that I didn't even know that she was pregnant?)

E.A.: Thank you. Actually, you kinda caught me at a bad time, I am on the way to the hospital

Both of us just start giggling like crazy.

She told me that she thought of me yesterday. She knew that I would email her to greet her today and knew that I would be wondering what was going on when I got her out of office. She was right.

blushpretty's 2nd Beauty Board

**UPDATE: As of October 11, 2009, this event is now sold out. Congrats to BlushPretty!**

My best friend, Stephanie (owner of BlushPretty) is holding her second Beauty Board on October 25, 2009 from 5-9 pm.

I attended the first one in July and I had a great time. There were many product to test out (all which are available at your local drugstore), demos on lining your eyes and how to apply fake eyelashes, and best of all, a gift bag at the end of the night which contained at least 2-3 full size products. There were also draws every half hour and the winner got to select another full size product of their choice (makeup remover wipes, mascaras, lip stains, body lotion, etc) and a grand prize at the end, a basket filled with products.

Now, I am not promoting this event because Stephanie is my best friend (well, I am kinda), I am promoting it because it's a must do. How can you pass up a night of beauty, food, wine, good company and most of all free products? It's on a Sunday night so leave your kids and husbands at home and join a bunch of beauty junkies for a night of fun.

To purchase a ticket, please click here. Hope to see you there!

product review: Sally Hansen Insta-Dry Fast Dry Nail Colour

I have seen many ads in the magazines lately for this product and I will admit, I am kind of a nail snob, meaning I only buy OPI and Essie polishes. Now being broke and unable to be the normal nail diva I am (buying a new polish every pay cheque, weekly polish changes), I have to resort to giving myself a mani/pedi, painting my own nails and also buying drug store brand polishes.

Since I always found the brush of Insta-Dry Fast Dry Nail Colour particularly interesting, I had to check it out for myself. At $6.99 a bottle at Shoppers, I decided on Uptempo Plum (purple-black) and Jumpin Jade (dark forest green). The brush is wide and flat which makes it easy to almost do only one swipe on your nail. An added bonus is that the colour is so dense that you only need one coat. I did two coats just for good measure.

First, I have painted two nails to test out each colour. Like I mentioned, one swipe and one coat was all it took to get me hooked. Tonight, I decided to paint my toes first since I still have laundry to do. Although I love the brush, it was very difficult to paint my toe nails. The brush is simply too big, but somehow I managed. I would only recommend this polish for your fingernails and when you need to paint your nails in a jiffy (it dries really quickly and you can make do without a top coat, but please do use a base coat, there is so much pigment in these colours that it will definitely stain your nails when you take it off). I can't wait until the laundry is done and I can finally paint my nails. I know that it certainly won't take long to do.

[blarkness rating: 4.5 out of 5] - I took off half a point because it was a bit hard to use on my toes.

more of my thoughts on my fall line up

THE HILLS:

Dear Kristin,

OMG, you are so annoying. Dude, I can't believe that you have such a potty mouth. It is not very lady like to be running your mouth like that. Only scum like Justin Bobby will fall for your bitchiness (oh wait, he has!)

I miss Lauren. She was and will always be the star of the show. You can never take her place.

I am debating on not watching anymore because you make it such a moronic show and although you will bring drama to it, I don't want it. I hope that at some point this season, you will show that you do have an ounce of class and will respect other people. I feel bad for Lo, Audrina, Stephanie and Jayde who have to put up with your crap.

Yes, I know that it's a reality show and that it's scripted, so maybe it's about time I call it a day, grown up and start watching shows of substance.

Yours truly,
An ex-fan of The Hills.

P.S. - I still love Brody!

THE CITY:

One thing I am majorly excited about - Jay and Whitney are no longer together. What a smart girl for dumping him! I only wish that she cheated on Jay with Alex the model first, and then dumped his ass. I am not a big fan of the show but I will continue to watch because I love Olivia Palermo. She is gorgeous and even though she can be bitchy, she is not bitchy like Kristin. Olivia is the original Queen Bee. Not too keen about this Roxy chick. Kinda weird that she was on The Hills before as Stephanie Pratt's best friend.

THE RACHEL ZOE PROJECT:

This show isn't really in my fall line up because we don't get it here in Canada, I have to search for it online. Mike and I were lucky to watch all six episodes of season 1 and the first three episodes of season 2 while in Vancouver but now...we can't find it. We absolutely adore this show and can't get enough of it. BANANAS! I want to go out and get her book, Style from A to Zoe and I have ready signed up for her daily newsletter. Talk about me being obsessed. I DIE!
