Monday Memories: fashion back in the day

I am talking about fashion back in grade 8, which would have been 1989 for me, I think. Here are some of the labels/brands I could think of that were popular here in Toronto in the late 80's:
  • Bula
  • Baja Beach Club
  • Vuarnet
  • Cotton Ginny
  • Beaver Canoe
  • Sun Ice
  • Northern Reflections
  • Benetton
  • Tretorn
What were some of the fashions/styles you were wearing in your 'tweens?

The Hunger Games

I've haven't been good with reading books lately but after hearing about The Hunger Games from fellow bloggers, much love, illy and life is bananas, it sure sparked an interest. I was intrigued that people are raving about this book. I had to see for myself. So, on my way into work on Friday, I stopped by Indigo and picked up the first book in the series. I read Friday night and all day Saturday in between making some things for my friend's baby shower and cleaning up the condo. This morning I finished the book.

I am not going to give you a description of the book because I went into reading it blind. I had no idea what the story was about except for reading the little blurb on the back of the book. Certainly from its description, I knew that I probably wouldn't be interested since I love books about high society (Gossip Girl), fashion (Shopaholic series) and vampires (Twilight saga). After finishing the book, now I am tempted to run to Chapters and pick up the the 2nd in the series, although being a bit type-A, I hate the fact that the first book is paperback and the next two books are hardcover. I really don't want to wait for them to come in paperback. I just can't wait.

Like the two bloggers who encouraged their readers to go read the book, I encourage and suggest you read The Hunger Games too. I don't think you would be disappointed and like me, I want you to go in not knowing anything about the story so you can't pass judgment.

Fill in the Blank Friday (she hearts chevron print)

TGIF everyone! Did you have a short week this week? Did it drag like crazy? Well, here is Friday again and since I missed out on last Friday's Fill in the Blanks, I sure am not going to skip out on this one because who can resist this week's cute FITBF image with the chevron pattern. If you feel like joining in the fun, head over to Lauren's blog to participate!

1. I am currently obsessed with men's magazines. This week I purchased the Feb and Mar issue of Details and the Mar issue of GQ. I plan to sit on the couch, throw on The Devil Wears Prada and read through these magazines before I pass them over to my husband.

2. Today I am happy because it's Friday and I love weekends. I'll be preparing giveaways for my friend's baby shower next week, uploading my iPhone with new music and painting my nails.

3. The age I am is 34 and the age I feel is in my 20's. Random people have been telling me that I look 25. It's a huge compliment. I also feel young because I still don't have kids.

4. My favorite place is the beach. Sure, I can't swim but nothing beats lying in the sun, listening to music, looking out at the ocean with a cocktail in one hand and a book in the other.

5. Something I have been procrastinating is getting my driver's licence.

6. The last thing I purchased was black stirrup Jean leggings from the Gap. I had a 40% coupon. These stirrups just fit perfectly and work well when wearing boots.

7. The thing I love most about my home is that it's small. No really, although I would love a bigger place, I love that it's tiny and not too hard to clean.

another good Glee episode

This song was awesome. Darren Criss nailed it. Rachel, not so much. I wonder if it's because of that god awful dress she was wearing.

And secretly, I was hoping for future Rachel and Blaine hook ups. I wanted him to be bi-curious for at least a couple of episodes.

Blame It on the Alcohol was pretty awesome too!

Today's a holiday

It's Family Day today and since Mike and I don't have our own kids to spend the day with, it's going to be a day full of blogging and movie watching. Mike's still sleeping so I thought I would quickly recap my weekend. Remember my Friday post? I said I had no plans well, as predicted, we ended up doing things. First of all, I should announce the winner of my what's your number giveaway. All four DVDs will be shipped out tomorrow to the lovely Ai of Our Bump Adventures.

Thanks to my awesome cousin in San Fran who wrote our the winner's name on her chalkboard! Now what did I do for the rest of my weekend?

*Watched Never Let Me Go. Kind of a sad movie but certainly didn't make me cry. It increased my interest in Andrew Garfield and now can't wait for Spider-man.

*Got my bangs trimmed, now I can see. Glad that my hairstylist noticed for himself that he thinned out my bangs the last time he cut my hair. Luckily since I asked for him to cut them short, they look thick and blunt again. BTW, that's me drinking Fruli out of a wine glass.

*Had some friends over to watch the NBA All-Star skills competition and ate some delicious food. Thanks Reg for the awesome photo, too bad you ate most of the spinach dip before snapping the photo.

*My BFF surprised me with a visit. We got to catch up for a bit and she's looking pretty darn cute with her little pregnant belly.

*Met one of my very good friend's new boyfriend and ate some sushi. I'm very, very happy for her and this one's definitely a keeper. I am very, very happy for her. Hopefully, there will be more double dates in the future because this guy's fun.

What did you do this weekend and if you have a holiday today, what are your plans?

P.S. - I just found out that I won the Consonant Healthy Detox for Body Kit from Solo Lisa's blog. This is the second giveaway I won this week. I honestly think it's because I have been picking up random pennies. I normally don't believe in the "see a penny, pick it up, all day long, you'll have good luck" but after picking one up as I was walking down a staircase while working last Saturday and then picking up another penny while setting up the classroom for a program I'm running tomorrow, I might just have to pick up pennies on the regular.  Next time you see a penny, pick it up and then let me know if you've had good luck.

Sephora by OPI: Cab Fare

Wow, I'm on the second row now. I have to admit it's fun painting my nails every week but I wish there was more of a variety. For almost three weeks straight I was wearing purple and now I get to start off my long weekend with the funkiest colour of the bunch - YELLOW - or more specifically, Cab Fare.

When I was painting my nails late Thursday night, I was a little nervous about the colour. The yellow has some shimmer to it and I would have much rather had it a flat colour. It's a good  thing that I only had to wear it on my nails on Friday for work. It's a long weekend so Monday night, the colour is definitely coming off.  I have to admit that my nails were throwing me off when I was eating McNuggets on my commute home. I was dipping the nuggets in hot mustard sauce and thought it was getting all over my nails but oops, it's my polish!  I won't be wearing Cab Fare again but it was fun to try.

Nail #7
Seeing that we are talking about this yellow polish, it seems only fitting to mention that if you feel like your nails are looking stained, rub some lemon slices on them to remove some of the discoloration.

a quick update

I've been so out of the loop. I'm pretty sure I mentioned that I worked 14 hours last Saturday and was back to work on Monday. I am totally looking forward to this long weekend. So far, we have no plans but who knows, maybe that will change. With the All Star game tomorrow night, Mike and I are planning to do a little beerfest and make mussels and bread using beer, pretty cool huh?

So here's what's going on with me:

I'm seriously in love with Britney's new video. She's back bitches. I just hope that this comeback is worth it and that she pulls through, none of that crap like she pulled at the MTV awards two years ago. I can't stop listening to her song and watching the video.

After the crapola last season of Survivor, this season has already started to redeem itself with Redemption Island. There are actually contestants with character this season and there's also Boston Rob and Russell. The first episode had drama and that's what draws me in. I don't know who chose the contestants last season, I just hope that person got fired.  This season looks like a good one so, I'm planning to include it in my Wednesday line up. Last season was the only season of Survivor I didn't watch out of the 22.

My BFF's baby shower is in two weeks and this weekend is the first that I am able to actually get my head into it. I have the stuff for the game I am putting together, I had the prizes for the game and I also have the materials to make a banner and the giveaways. I just have to make sure I don't get lazy.

Remember some time ago when I won a free trip (it was pretty much a year ago), well, after much debate with the hubby (yes, I know, what's there to debate, it's a free trip), I booked it yesterday and we are leaving mid-April for a week  stay at Melia Cayo Santa Maria (we got upgraded to oceanview!). It's not a resort on our list and it's not one that we would want to stay at but hey, it's free and with all the stress at work, I totally need this.

 {all photos via}

After a very tough week for me mentally and emotionally, I received an email to let me know that I won one of the several giveaways I entered through the blogging community. I won a very cute set of note cards from Yes, Teacher through Ashley's blog, A Hasty Life. This totally made my day.

I missed a lot of my shows this week so I will be catching up on Glee, One Tree Hill, Cougar Town, Grey's and Vampire Diaries.

Lastly, I have to thank my awesome hubby for surprising me with a six pack of Fruli beer after he found out how sad and upset I was on Tuesday. Isn't he awesome?!?! If you haven't tried Fruli beer, it's a delicious strawberry beer. I highly suggest you go out and try it.

Here's wishing everyone a happy weekend and if you have a long weekend too, I hope you find something special to do on Monday, even if it means staying in your pajamas all day watching cheesy daytime television.

P.S. My DVD giveaway closes tonight at midnight. Don't forget to enter!

    GO Train pet peeves

I commute every day and I take Mississauga Transit to the GO train station and then the GO train to Union Station in downtown Toronto. I then take the TTC subway (Toronto Transit Authority) to my work. That's three different modes of transportation but it only takes me an hour and five minutes door to door.

On my commute, I tend to tweet about things that irk me about passengers and my fellow blogger and IRL friend, Sting usually agrees with me and also tweets her own pet peeves.  So, here is a collaboration of some of our pet peeves:
    • When people text on their cell/smartphone and don't turn off the keyboard clicking sound
    • People who believe the armrest belongs to them.
    • People who eat hot dogs on the train. Maybe it's just me since I don't like hot dogs. They smell disgusting.
    • People who stretch their legs all the way out in between your legs.
    • When people's arms keep bumping into you while they read the paper.
    • People who talk really loud on their phone while you and other people are trying to sleep.

Do you commute by public transit to get to work? Do you have any pet peeves about commuters?

Don't forget to enter my giveaway, you have one day left to enter! By the way, you get a chance to win ALL four DVDs!!!

Sephora by OPI: Just a Little Dangerous

This was actually last week's colour. Again, I painted my nails on Thursday and worked all weekend so I didn't get a chance to post it. There will be another nail polish post in a couple of days for this week's colour. If you look at the box, it's going to be yellow. I will for sure get some interesting looks.

This is very similar to What a Broad (last week's colour) but the difference is, this shade is slightly darker and has more of a shimmer to it. What a Broad is more flat and somewhat matte.  I am a fan of this dark colour and the fact that it's purple but almost looks black. Have you ever tried a matte colour by OPI? I don't know who in their right mind would want to sport a true matte polish. In my opinion, it doesn't look flattering at all.

    Nail tip #6
When taking off a very dark polish (or even a red shade), swipe cuticle oil or olive oil all over your nail and cuticle before removing old polish with nail polish remover. This will prevent the old dark polish from staining your nails.

    Monday Memories: Snugglebumms

Yesterday at brunch with my sister-in-law, brother-in-law and their friends, part of our conversation was about childhood toys. It started with my BIL having a monchichi. I then mentioned that I had this weird toy but I couldn't remember what it was called and I thought that it glowed, sort of like a glow worm. After typing various names in a google search, I finally found an image of Snugglebumms. Does anyone else remember these strange, little creatures? I had the blue one.

Fill in the Blank Friday (guilty pleasures edition)

I'm so late with Fill in the Blank Friday. I worked all weekend (even last night) so I am behind on Twitter and blogging. Today, in an hour or so, I will be heading over to brunch at The Boiler House for my SIL and BIL's birthdays that passed. I can't wait to wind down and just enjoy my Sunday. Tonight is the Grammys, I'm excited to watch and hoping that the performances don't suck! I hope everyone had a good weekend and that you didn't have to work like me. p.s. I finally got to see the series finale of Friday Night Lights. It was awesome and will sadly be missed. What a great show! I can't believe it had to come to an end.

    1.   The TV show/website that I watch/read that I would be embarrassed to tell anyone about is Keeping up with the Kardashians. I am also embarrassed to admit that I can watch Laguna Beach over and over again. As for books, I have read all of the Gossip Girl series.

    2.  An item of clothing that is worn and torn but that I love far to much to throw away is nothing really. If it's worn down, I will eventually get rid of it to make room for more new clothes.  I do have my washcloth from when I was a baby. That I will never throw away.

    3.  My grocery store impulse buy is items that are on sale, especially Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

    4.  Something I do at work to pass time that I wouldn't want my co-workers to know about is tweeting and blogging. When I don't have much to do at work, I write up a post. If I need a break, I check my Twitter. I don't tell co-workers that I blog or tweet because I don't want them to find me and learn about my personal life.

    5.  One thing in my life that I could give up, but never will is bread. I know it's bad for me but the smell of it is so intoxicating!

    6.  A little indulgence that I have is to have a little piece of chocolate before bed. It's the reason why I buy little bits of chocolates, you know the Halloween candy size.

    7.  The junk drawer/area in my house is everywhere. I have little pocket of junk all over the condo. I really need to tidy up but my really junk drawer is in my night stand. There's all sorts of stuff in there.

Don't forget to link up your blank over at Lauren's blog.

Valentine's Day came early for me

Valentine's Day isn't until Monday and usually Mike and I don't celebrate it but I am using it as an excuse to buy myself a watch. This is my Valentine's present to myself. I have been eyeing another watch, but I came to the conclusion that I didn't want to spend $250 on a watch when I am not a big watch-wearing person. So, I found a rose gold watch from Fossil. I have gone to try this watch on three times and each time, I walked away, thinking that there will be a right time to buy.

And yesterday was the right day to buy. I went to The Bay at Eaton Centre and saw a sign that all watches were 15% off.  Another incentive for me to buy was that I had a $60 gift card. The watch was $170 and with the 15% off,  the $60 of because of the gift card and tax, I paid $103. Not bad huh?

I also got a collector's tin because of their Valentine's Day gala going on. There was another tin to choose from but I am not a big fan of pink. I am thinking that I can use this tin to keep all the cocktail rings I have.

Because of the promotion, I also got this cute reusable bag and a little umbrella. Isn't this awesome that I bought a watch and got all these extra items?

I have to say that I am glad I waited to buy the watch. I had a gut feeling that with Valentine's Day there would be some type of sale and promotion.  Tyler, at The Bay was great and helped me decide between the watch that I originally wanted and this one. If you are in the market for a watch, check out Fossil at The Bay and take advantage of the 15% and hopefully the little extras. In the end, as much as I love the white ceramic watch and with the 15% off, I still couldn't justify spending that much. I don't regret my purchase at all and I am quite happy wearing it today. Happy Valentine's Day to myself, I love my gift. Thank you ME!

Do you buy yourself a little Valentine's Day gift?

    what's your number giveaway

I thought it might be time for another giveaway. This giveaway's theme is about numbers. I realized that there are lots of movies with a number in their title. I picked out my favorite four. I know these days, most people don't want DVDs in their house because it creates clutter but you can always watch these movies and then pass it along to someone else.

    {giveaway includes 17 Again - it's a pretty good movie, trust me, 50 First Dates - why don't I remember this movie but it's the first one I saw with a number in the title, 13 Going on 30 - who doesn't love this movie and 10 Things I Hate About You - classic teen movie}

This giveaway will be open until Friday, February 18 at midnight EST and is open to Canada and US readers (sorry international readers, it's because I can't guaranteed the DVD format will work for you). I will announce the winner next Saturday. Entering this giveaway will be simple (I hate having to leave 10 different comments to follow on twitter, tweet this giveaway, etc...), all you have to do is follow my blog through GFC or privately and then leave a comment and tell me what your favorite number is. It's just that easy. Check back to see if you won but I will also try and notify you by email.

Good luck and by the way, my favorite number is 5.

    Monday Memories: m & m

I'm almost positive I have posted this photo before but as I was cleaning out some files on my laptop, I came across this one again. This was taken back in our clubbing days, probably over 6-7 years ago. Maureen has been a friend of mine since high school and Mikey, I also knew him in high school because he coached my brother's basketball team. Years later, we are still friends and Mikey is now married to my best friend, Julie, who I also knew back in high school. They have a little one on the way. It's funny how things turn out.

    Superbowl Sunday, here I come!!!

I'm a girly girl and while growing up, I was the kind of girl who would accidentally forget to bring her gym clothes or suddenly be sick or have cramps. I hated gym class. I detested sports. Kinda weird coming from a family where my dad runs, cycles and once played basketball, my mom is totally to all racquet sports and golf and my brother was big on basketball.

I don't get involved in watching any type of sports - I don't cheer for the Jays, Raptors or the Leafs. I'm one of those fake sports fans who jumps on the bandwagon when a team makes it to the playoffs. I think you are beginning to get the picure.

So today is a big deal for me because it's the first time I will be watching the Super Bowl. Suddenly after reading so many bloggers into the NFL and college football, I got curious and wanted to learn about the sport. Back in November, I asked Mr. Dee to explain football to me and he did a pretty good job but I need it to be explained to me in terms that I would understand. So, right before the Jets and Patriots game, I found this blog, Chick 101 - Football for Girls and read about the basic rules

Right after that, I further read about:
I love how the positions are described in terms I can understand. Whoever wrote this blog is brilliant. I have to read more posts on this blog but for now, I think I know all I need to know for now.

An incentive for watching tomorrow's game is my cousin has shared with me the details of the football pool she's in. She explained everything to me over gchat and now I must watch the game and send her a text if she wins. This will require me to pay attention to the scores and figure out if the squares she picked is the winning one. So much pressure...

I'm not cheering for a team because I don't know anything about both teams. For now, I am just learning the game so one day, I can find my favorite team and my favorite QB or player in general.  A stupid question to ask and it's a question that a girly girl like me will ask - is there a team whose colours are purple and black? LOL!

Do you watch football? Who are you rooting for? Are you like me who is kinda clueless about the game?

Sephora by OPI: What a Broad

I'm a tad late in posting this and it's probably because I only got around to painting my nails Thursday night.  Now, this is a colour I love, it's dark and purple - a perfect combination. I cut my nails really short since I didn't want What a Broad to look vampy.

    Nail tip #5
When wearing dark polish, your nails should be short. Sqoval (square but rounded on the sides) is the best shape.

Fill in the Blank Friday (magazine edition)

It's been a tough, long week. I woke up on Wednesday amidst the snow storm at 4:45 am so I could ensure I would get to work for 6:45 am. On Thursday, I had a horrible nightmare in the early morning which caused me to kinda scream. I couldn't go back to sleep so I got up and went to the gym at 5:30 am. I am exhausted. This would explain why I suddenly got the nickname of Darth Vader from my husband. Apparently last night, my breathing/snoring sounded like Darth Vader. I am so embarrassed and I can't believe I just shared that with you all.

After I finish this post, I am going to watch an episode of Cougar Town and then crawl into bed. I was planning to type up a couple of blog posts and do some commenting but I really don't feel like sitting in front of the computer after the week I had.  No plans this weekend except for my attempt to watch the Super Bowl. Oh ya, I had a great dinner with Mr. Dee tonight. I think the last time I saw him was December 4 but the last time we had dinner together was November 3. We had lots of catching up to do.

I hope you have a great weekend whatever you are doing. If you are down with football, are you cheering for the Packers or Steelers? Now for some fun stuff, Fill in the Blanks...

    {via weheartit

This week, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Lauren for this week's blanks. I sent her the idea of doing something on magazines and gave her a couple of suggestions. Thanks Lauren for using them this week.  To join in the fun, check out Lauren's blog post.

    1.   If I could only read one magazine publication for the rest of eternity, I would choose In Style. I love everything about the magazine - the photos, articles, columns, etc.
    2.  If I were to run my own magazine it would be about celebrity gossip and fashion.

    3.  I buy my magazines (at the grocery check stand or via subscription)
I have a subscription to In Style and Women's Health. I want to build up my reading materials so I am planning to subscribe to Caribbean Living and Entertainment Weekly. I occasionally buy magazines from the newsstand if I like who is on the cover (i.e. Lauren Conrad).

    4.  I prefer my magazines (in print or online) in print ALL THE WAY. I love to curl up on the couch and flip through the pages. I read them as if I was reading a Japanese magazine, back to front. Lauren recently mentioned an online magazine, Matchbook Magazine and how I wish it came in print because I want to read all the articles but not on my laptop.

    5.  The number of magazines I buy each month is
one or two, it all depends on who is on the cover. This month I want to buy Cosmo (Mila Kunis), Details (Andrew Garfield) and Lucky (Nicole Richie).
    6. My favorite magazine genre is (lifestyle, gossip, home, etc...)
fashion and gossip. The perfect combination!

    7.  The magazines I read regularly are In Style, Women's Health, Us Weekly, GQ, Travel + Leisure and Entertainment Weekly.

    January confessions

I hate wearing dress pants. I'll wear skirts, dresses or leggings to work. I use to only wear pants because I thought tights and skirts were uncomfortable. But I think the real reason I don't wear dress pants anymore is because since my mom moved away, I have no one to hem them up.

I'm really beginning to like mustard. Not the gross yellow French's mustard but the hot mustard kind. I am really digging the hot mustard or honey mustard sauce at McDonald's.

Love My Smile is my new best friend. I'm addicting to pearly white teeth.

I heart Michael Copon. I loved him on One Tree Hill and after seeing him on Kourtney and Kim Take on New York, I have now started to follow him on Twitter. And guess where he was just at, my favorite place in the world, Punta Cana.

I'm not a big fan of chicken wings. The Westside Crew went for all-you-can-eat wings. I certainly cannot eat a lot but I'll eat one or two. We went to Kelsey's and got some delicious flavours - Indian Butter Chicken, Golden Buffalo, Guinness BBQ, there's too many too mention.

Yes, I'm hating on Avril Lavigne because she's with Brody Jenner. I just don't get why Brody would want to be with a sk8r girl when he's dated Playboy models.
I really like Matchbook's online magazine but I wish I could read it in print. There's just something so relaxing about holding and reading an actual magazine.
